Music captures the interest of everyone, for it has the power to communicate feelings, both happy and sad. I feel delighted and inspired by some pieces of music and admire the artist and the talent. I would also like to inspire people through my performance and to dedicate myself to developing my musical talent.
For that purpose, I want to play melodies on the drums. Highly technical musical phrases are impressive; however, I believe that melodic phrases with simple techniques also make music interesting. So I concentrate on harmonizing with the sound of other instruments when I play. My drum teacher, Sato Hidenori, often improvises rhythms and melodies on the piano. Together, many musicians create a sound that is greater than that of each instrument alone.
Some people think that the drums have no melody. They believe that the drums just create rhythm and support the other instruments in a band. However, I disagree with this concept because I definitely know that the drums have melodies. I always try to play the drums as if they are singing. I think it is more melodious if I play the instruments with this in mind.
I experience this revelation each time piano. I have played the piano since I was a child. I take delight in playing, and I most enjoy concentrating on phrases. One day, I realized that the more I concentrated on expressing phrases the more people wanted to listen to my playing.
One of my favorite drummers is Brian Blade. When he plays the drums, he looks extremely happy and he produces music that is eloquent and brilliant. I think he is always concerned about melody and harmony. Because of his ability to create these melodies, his fellow musicians play his music as if they were singing. Their instruments sound like human voices. I think that human voice is more expressive than any other instrument. So human voices are never replaced by any other instrument. So, to evoke the human voice in one's instrumental music as Mr. Blade does with the drums has a strong impression on people.
Ifm going to apply this idea to my drum playing, and I want to create melodious music that is as expressive as the human voice. For that purpose, I always take account of harmony and concentrate on playing melodies. It goes without saying that concentration is indispensable for playing music. From my experience with playing the piano, if I concentrate on my playing, I can make it sound as if it were singing.
Therefore, Ifm going to be a drummer who can delives vigor to the audience by playing the drums as if they were singing, and concentrate on expressing the melodies through drumming. I believe that this way is the most effective way to impress audiences and stimulate other musicians.
